Our latest paper, on substrate-specific gene expression in Fomitopsis pinicola, has just appeared in AEM. This represents a collaboration with Bob Blanchette, Dan Cullen, Emma Master, Igor Grigoriev, and Jonathan Schilling. We cultured F. pinicola on spruce, aspen and pine and studied substrate-specific transcription and RNA editing levels. The take-home message is that this one species is able to adjust gene expression at the level of RNA according to host species. Currently, we are preparing a follow-up paper reporting results from six species of brown-rot wood-decayers on three different substrates.
