Dylan Glotzer defends Master’s thesis, 3/29/12

Congratulations to Dylan Glotzer, who passed his Master’s defense on March 29 (a scant three days before the deadline to turn in theses for a May 2012 graduation). Dylan’s project was titled “A comparison of gene tree/species tree reconciliation software and an application to predicting class II peroxidase gene copy number in the Agaricomycetes.” Dylan explored diverse approaches to reconciling the phylogeny of Fungi and that of the gene family encoding lignin-degrading class II peroxidases, with a focus on assessing the number of copies of the gene in the ancestor of the mushroom-forming Fungi. This study is useful as a benchmark comparison of different methods of gene tree/species tree reconciliation.
